Bobbles Bobbles Everywhere

(107)
Difficulty: Easy

The idea for this bag came fully formed into my mind when I was in Virginia walking through a tiny little shopping center filled with antique shops with gilded chairs in the windows, fancy plates for holding oysters on the half shell. There was a shop filled with beautiful linens, some antique, embellished with hand-made lace sienna with age, linen sprays made from botanicals, beautiful stationary of carefully drawn nuts or vines with passion flowers dropping from their coils. And then the next shop: A woman's dress shop. An exquisite pair of trousers, a spare chemise, narrow elegant shoes one wouldn't dare walk in through a be-dewed lawn, and a black sweater with brightly colored felted balls around each cuff.

Instantly I could see the bobble bag. I had only to make it . . .

I have been lucky enough to see quite a few bobble bags in the wild. And what a thrill it is! One was made in muted earth tones. Fabulous. Another was in shades of pink. Still another a sea of blues. I loved them all. What will yours be?

    Amazing Magnetic Snap

    (SAM18-)

    Metal Finishes:

If you want a magnetic snap closure that makes a statement, this is the perfect snap. The pull knob on the snap will immediately become a focal point on the front of your bag, dressing up even the most unassuming bag with its high polish. I especially love this snap on bags with flaps: Anouk, and her upsized cousin Vianne show off the snap at bottom of their curvy flaps, all three of the Dinner Party Backstage bags wear it beautifully along with cabochon rivets and a great JUL handle. The Rather Huge Carpet bag is immediately dressed up with the snap knob on one side surrounded by large, luscious Camellias, and a small Camellia on the other side to cover the snap back.

Bind Off: The bind off method for both the small and large bobble bags is a conventional bind off.

When to Felt Bobbles and Bag: For the large bobbled bag, the bobbles should be tied on BEFORE either bag or bobbles are felted. Please felt in a lingerie bag that is about the same size as the unfelted bag, so that bag does not pull out of shape and the bobbles do not pull away from the bag too much. You want them to pull away a little bit so they bobble around in a fun and flirty way, but not so much that their round shape is distorted. Spend some time after felting getting those bobbles back into nice sphere-ish shapes.

All Editions

Number of Bobbles: The number of bobbles I call for in this pattern is, admittedly, a bit high. If you are daunted by the high number of bobbles, try this first: Make 3 of each size in each color. Lay them out or put them on the bag and then either add more or stop. Do not feel that you have to put all the bobbles on the bag. Only put on as many as you want. Stop when the bag looks the way *you* want it to look. If you have some bobbles left over, make a little cell phone or other Noni bag and put those extra bobbles around the top.
