Classic Top-Down Sweater for Women Pattern

Difficulty: Easy

Every woman needs a classic sweater in her wardrobe, this classic sweater: the pullover is basic enough to wear with jeans and a t-shirt on your way to the farmer's market or to dress it up with a pair of tailored trousers for the office. The cardigan - embellished with cherry blossoms, made in embellished yarn or in delicious cashmere without any embellishment at all - is beautiful, and timeless. You might just want to make this sweater in several colors and fibers so you can wear it all year round.

The pattern includes instructions for top-down pullover or cardigan, with straight or bell sleeves at 3/4 length or long, and a placket that is simply ribbed or ribbed that terminates in a Stockinette roll . . . so you can make it in different colors and fibers as well as slightly different iterations and each sweater will have it's own personality.

  • Plum Ella Coat with Lime ruffles, side view

Ella Coat Rediscovered for Women Pattern

    Delivery Method:

This first of the Ella coats came into being after I made a felted coat for little girls. The striped pattern in the little girl's coat was inspired by the piled up mattresses in the Princess and the Pea story. I even sandwiched 3-dimensional green peas between the stripes. Because a felted garment must be made so much larger than the size it will become, I was able to wear the coat before it was felted. I was smitten with the fit of the unfelted coat and the first Ella Coat was born.

Have You Ever Made a Sweater and Then Tried it On, Only to Find It Didn't Fit?   I have . . .

The yarn was a lovely cornflower blue. And so soft. I worked on it for a bit nearly every day. I made the back, then the two fronts, then the sleeves. I had even found an error in the pattern, had a long conversation with the publication, fixed the error myself by looking at the picture with a magnifying class. I finished the knitting and then I carefully wove in all the ends. I washed the sweater peices and carefully blocked them. Then I put it all together. Next, I made the neck and the plackets. Only then was I able to really try it on for the first time.
