She opened the beautifully wrapped box and inside was a tiny bag shaped like a heart, white with red and pink beads, a little hand-beaded heart near the tappered bottom, a pretty pink tassel the perfect conclusion to its shape. It was September 28th, a Sunday. She and Diana were lingering over brunch at their favorite place. Even though the air was brisk this close to the water, how long would they be able to sit outside? They were the only ones on the deck, enoying the warm sun, the salt-laced breezes, the spectacular morning. They had been meeting at this place now for nearly 6 years and they both cherished these mornings when they could just talk for hours and no one would be looking for them, chores and responsibilities could wait.
"What's this lovely thing?" Naomi had wondered out loud and looked up at Diana almost with little tears in her eyes because she loved the things Diana could make but was never brave enough to ask for something knitted, believing that such things are best given without being looked for.
"Let's toast," Diana said, "because I think you're the best." And so they had toasted, lingering longer on the deck and then walking on the beach into the afternoon.
You see, Heart on My Sleeve is for anyone you love. It is for your oldest friend, your daughter just becase or on her wedding day, for your son's new wife, for your mother when you want to say without words thank you . . . for everything, for putting up with me. Add cherry blossoms and all-over beading and it is a celebration of Spring for yourself. Cover it with sparkle rivets and it is a celebration of joy, of life.
How will you dress it so that it expesses your most heart-felt emotions?
