These little bags are a simple and delectable as the round melon balls that inspired them. For me, they evoke hot, breezy days where sitting under a weeping willow by a slow-moving river is a respite from the heat. And all the more so if you have fresh cut melons on a nearby table. They've been sitting in the cooler or ice box and they are so cold there is condensation on their exterior skin, making them slick when you pick them up to put them on the cutting board. The knife makes a satisfying swish and then the dull sound of the blade hitting the wooden board and the melon is open: the scents of cantelope, honeydew, watermelon red, pink, and buttercup yellow. Scoop out perfect balls of melon and put them in bowls. Melon so cold its like swallowing melon sorbet. Hot summer days don't seem so bad because they bring such amazing fruits.
Capture the simplicity of delicious melon bites any time of year. In the warm months, or in warm climes, they are ideal knitting: they are so quick to knit, and so small that not only will you have a cute little bag to carry around, but both the knitting and the carrying will not add to the warmth of the day. In cooler months or cooler climes, they recall the tastes of summer.
Think of each bag as a canvas for your creativity: Embellish with beads, flowers, sparkles, or all three and see how your ideas for the next one follow on the heels of the last.
